Greetings, Secular fam! I’m writing up a little supplemental Substack today to talk turkey about the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. Secular AZ has been on Twitter Xitter for over a decade, and the app, despite problems over the years, was a (mostly) great place to build community and rally around causes for the common good. It didn’t necessarily bring out the best in everyone over the years…
…but it was great for breaking news and to promote events and issues to our followers. A friend once said that Facebook is where you find all the people you were stuck going to high school with, and Twitter is where you find all the people you SHOULD have gone to high school with.
Now, under the direction of the new owner of Xitter, it has become a place where bigots and extremists now seem to have an amplified presence without much fact-checking or oversight. Additionally, the new owner has removed some of the protections against hate speech, and the voices that encourage violence are getting louder.
It is for those reasons that, effective today, we will no longer be on the Twitter/X/Xitter platform. You can still find us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, Bluesky, and of course, here on Substack.
The legislative session will begin in just under two months, so I’m sure we’ll have LOTS of information to share with our members and followers, so be sure to plug in to our numerous channels so together we can be the change we want to see in Arizona.
In Solidarity,
Jeanne
Love that you're leaving twitter. Wish you'd give Spoutible.com a try.
Congrats on your departure from Twitter/X. I quit soon after Elmo arrived, and no regrets. Threads is pretty easy transition for me.
