It is with great enthusiasm that Secular Communities for Arizona has hired renowned local activist Eddie Chavez Calderon as our new Development Director. Mr. Chavez Calderon is a passionate champion of civic education and engagement who is highly respected as a champion for social justice throughout Arizona.
Here’s what Eddie has to say:
Hi all!
I am excited and honored to join Secular AZ as the Development Director. This role provides a remarkable opportunity to continue advocating for marginalized communities in Arizona. With over six years of experience in social justice and nonprofit work, including my roles as an organizer, migrant rights activist, and advocate within a Jewish progressive organization for more than five years, I have seen firsthand how a Christian nationalist agenda, promoted by state-level organizations, has systematically stripped these communities of their rights and access to opportunities. I am eager to continue my advocacy as the Development Director of Secular AZ and to further the fight for justice in this beautiful state.
Arizona is currently facing some of the greatest challenges we have ever seen. Attacks on women and minorities, wealth and racial inequality, and assaults on our immigrant community are on the rise. We must continue to resist hate and extremist ideas and policies. Our state and its people have a long history of resilience and struggle, much like the beautiful vegetation in the desert that blooms despite all odds.
My connection to Arizona runs deep. I migrated to the United States with my mother at the tender age of four, fleeing violence and danger in search of the American dream. Growing up undocumented, I understood how opportunities here are abundant but not always equitable. For years, I have rallied and organized, from the streets of downtown Phoenix to the steps of Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., proudly combating injustice. Justice work is emotionally and physically demanding, often requiring us to put our bodies on the line. Yet, I find energy in the people who continue to fight, win, and celebrate together. I cherish moments of mixing music, laughing with community members and friends, and enjoying some of the best tacos in Phoenix.
As Development Director, my primary goals are to cultivate strong, nurturing relationships and collaborations with the board, donors, and members. I aim to build sustainability and resources that support, enrich, and uplift Secular AZ's mission. I look forward to getting to know you and listening to your stories. Please feel free to reach to me at development @ secularaz.org so we can schedule a time to meet, whether virtually or in person.
Un abrazo.
Sincerely,
Eddie Chavez Calderon
